Director’s Message

Dear Colleagues,

I warmly welcome you to the Eversource Energy Center. Our research and collaboration with utilities and industry partners positions us as frontrunners in mitigating storm hazards, delivering improved reliability, and increasing the resiliency of the electric grid.

The Center is a hub for interdisciplinary research, technology and software development, delivering important benefits for communities, businesses and municipalities by continually improving reliability and emergency response, and minimizing storm and other security event impacts. Several key research outcomes include:

  • Leveraging LiDAR-based 3-D imaging of the electric grid infrastructure and surrounding trees for advanced storm outage modeling.
  • Predicting a storm’s impact and the number and location of outages.
  • Creating a sustainable and storm-resistant forest design based on how trees move in the wind. This includes a ‘right tree right place’ planting approach with towns, which is minimizing tree and power line damages. The program also supports the local wood industry.
  • Seeing advanced electric grid resilience improvement opportunities in a new light with simulations for reliability and security, and considering distributed, emergency, and renewable generation options.
  • Identifying preferred substation locations in coastal and inland flood plain areas using simulation analyses.

Through mentorship and teaching, and the expertise of UConn’s Schools of Engineering, College of Agriculture, Health & Natural Resources, and the Business School, we are training the next generation to solve real-world challenges where weather, security and energy intersect.

The Center invites utilities, organizations and industry partners to participate in our research, activities and initiatives. This consortium approach will result in new technologies and software, leading to transformative commercial products and services.

On behalf of our Center team, we greatly appreciate your interest in the Eversource Energy Center and invite you to explore our website.

Sincerely,

Prof. Emmanouil Anagnostou, Ph.D.
