Undergraduate Research Fellowships: The Science of Energy Resilience in a Changing Environment

Background: The Eversource Energy Center at the University of Connecticut is offering an interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program focused on Power Grid Resilience to Severe Storms in a Changing Environment

Program Highlights:

  • Work directly with a faculty mentor to develop an independent research project
  • Conduct cutting-edge research and present it to the Center community (UConn faculty, staff, and students & Eversource staff)
  • Participate in an immersive, collaborative experience with other research fellows, Center faculty, and graduate students
  • Receive a stipend of $4,000 and free room and board on the scenic UConn campus
  • Travel support up to $600 per person

Timing: 8 week program May 22 – July 14, 2017

Application Deadline: April 15, 2017

Who?: Open to upper level (rising Junior or Senior) undergraduate students from any College or University

  • Using weather data to assess predictive outage uncertainty and accelerate storm restoration (Astitha/Wanik)
  • Effects of roadside forest management treatments on tree and forest ecosystem structure and functioning (Fahey/Morzillo)
  • Assessing infrastructure and vegetation change using LiDAR (Parent)
  • Evaluation of substations vulnerability of flooding in current and climate change Scenarios (Shen/Nikolopoulos)
  • Grid resilience assessment using the GoldSim model (Bagtzoglou/W. Zhang)
