Author: Appointing Prof. Sung Yeul Park as RTDS Lab Director

Dear Colleagues,

I am delighted to announce Prof. Sung Yeul Park as Director of the Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) Lab.

Dr. Sung Yeul Park is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Virginia Tech in 2009. His research focuses on power electronics, battery management systems, renewable energy integration, grid resiliency, and cybersecurity. Dr. Park has led numerous federally and industry-funded projects, including work with the Department of Energy, Office of Naval Research, and Eversource Energy Center. He is the recipient of several awards, such as the NSF CAREER Award, multiple IEEE Future Energy Challenge Education Awards, and the 2025 Charles H. Knapp Associate Professorship. Dr. Park has published extensively in top journals and conferences and holds multiple U.S. patents in power electronics and energy systems.

The RTDS, composed of three NovaCor chassis and IBM’s POWER8 processors, can conduct real-time dynamic simulations of large-scale power systems with thousands of nodes at very small time steps (1-150 μs), and emulate cyber-physical distribution systems (CPS) with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL).

Please join me in congratulating Sung Yeul and wishing him all the best in his leadership role as RTDS Lab Director!

Best regards,
Diego Cerrai
Interim Director of the UConn Eversource Energy Center
