Greater Hartford Players: Our Team In All Kinds Of Weather

(Hartford Courant)

Where can you turn when March roars in like a lion? From making predictions to preparations, these Greater Hartford Players show us how to weather the storm.

Manos Anagnostou’s team is using remote sensing data and numerical models to predict rainfall more accurately.

“We’re building algorithms based on new generation radars.”

They are adding more physics in hydrologic modeling capturing the mixed snow and rain effects in the water cycle. A 35- and 50-year river flow reanalysis will help towns assess their vulnerability to flooding.

“We are bringing information down to the granular level — deriving flows for creeks crossing roads.”

Advanced models of power outages will help utilities deploy crews more effectively. “Our model predicts where those outages are,” he says.
