Trees removed in North Haven to prevent power outages being replaced

(New Haven Register)

The town of North Haven is partnering with the University of Connecticut’s Extension of Forestry Program to repopulate trees removed due to their perceived propensity to cause power outages during storms.

The collaboration comes as The United Illuminating Co. is in the midst of its vegetation program that calls for the removal of trees within an eight-foot diameter of power lines. That program has proved controversial in some of the municipalities UI services as residents have protested the clear-cutting of trees in neighborhoods that relied upon them for shade and aesthetics.
