Remote Sensing and Reliability of Gas and Electrical Infrastructure Systems Workshop

The “Remote Sensing and Reliability of Gas and Electrical Infrastructure Systems” workshop, hosted by the Gas Technology Institute and the Eversource Energy Center, brought together more than 60 utility representatives and experts from industry and academia. The workshop discussed how remote sensing technology can be used to improve the ability of gas and electric utilities to monitor and ensure reliability of their infrastructure. LiDAR, SAR, and various other remote sensing technologies have already been deployed by some utilities to detect earth movements, direct vegetation management, and monitor infrastructure. The workshop participants concluded that further research is needed to improve capabilities of utilities to predict factors contributing to infrastructure failure and obtain near real-time information through remote sensing.
